TrophyDUDLEY - Brad Lane's two-run double with two out in the ninth inning Thursday night lifted Cherryville to a 2-1 victory over Wayne County and the state title.

Post 100 won the title series 4-2. Cherryville advances to the Southeastern Regional in Sumter, S.C., next week.

In the ninth, Jonathan Brookins drew a one-out walk off pitcher Noah Eden. After Wes Hudson struck out, Justin Sanford blooped a single to right.

Lane then lined a 2-1 pitch into right center, just past diving right fielder Aldon Cox. The ball rolled to the wall, scoring Brookins and Sanford to give Cherryville (28-18) the lead.

Ralph Roberts closed out Wayne County (35-11) in the bottom of the inning to remain perfect in American Legion play at 12-0. Roberts struck out 16 in the complete-game five-hitter, and walked three.

"I knew we had it in us,'' Roberts said of the Cherryville comeback. "(Winning the state title) is what we came here for.''

Before the ninth, Cherryville struggled against Eden, who took the loss. Post 100 saw only two runners get to third base in the first eight innings off the Wayne County starter, who struck out 13.
